Arena and Roman Theatre
The Arles arena, a vast UNESCO-listed amphitheatre, can be visited in full sun or admired from the surrounding lanes. A little further on, the Roman Theatre reveals its two surviving columns, often used for summer festivals. Walking around these monuments hand in hand, then climbing up to the arena viewpoint, already makes a wonderful opening to a date.
In the footsteps of Van Gogh
On Place du Forum, the famous ochre café where Vincent Van Gogh painted his Café Terrace at Night draws glances and strollers. The Vincent Van Gogh Foundation extends the tribute with contemporary exhibitions in a restored mansion. The Alyscamps, a Roman necropolis turned stone alley lined with cypress trees, were also sketched by the painter: a romantic walk amid the cicadas, perfect for conversation.
The Rhône and the nearby Camargue
In the evening, the Rhône quays offer a superb sunset, right where Van Gogh painted his Starry Night. To the south, the Camargue unfolds marshes, white horses and pink flamingos: a nature outing for two, by bike or by car, quickly turns into a real adventure. On Lyad, members from Arles share their favourite spots; it is up to you to find someone to roam them with.
